It’s The Little Things

Blog 2022-03-29 Little Things cropped

As I entered my local grocery store this weekend, I reached for a shopping cart. My thoughts weren’t on my list of needed items, but rather on how much I appreciated the cart gliding through the store. It was effortless to push; there were no rattling wheels, no need to course-correct the direction it was going, no discarded flyers or bags from previous operators. From the store’s perspective, it wasn’t a big deal to have these types of carts; it’s what they do.

It’s the little things that can be important.

Checking out with the cashier and the bag “boy” (both whom I estimated were in their mid-80s), we exchanged pleasantries as I thanked them for what they do. Surprisingly, Claire said “And thank you for your smile; it’s made my day.” I don’t think it’s a big deal to smile; in fact, I guess I tend to smile easily … it’s what I do.

It’s the little things that can be important.

As leaders, we can fall into the trap of believing our impact is a result of doing extraordinary things … of making monumental gestures … of going above and beyond the call of duty.

But what if it’s the little things that you naturally do that are important to someone else?

Don’t minimize asking how your colleague’s weekend was before you launch into what you need from them. Don’t forget to say “please” and “thank you,” like our parents taught us as youngsters. When people thank you for helping them, don’t respond with “no problem;” instead, try “my pleasure.” Offer to help where you can, even if it’s only for a few minutes; show up with enthusiasm even if you believe the task is menial.

It’s the little things that can be important.

This Week’s Challenge: Oftentimes, the gifts we bring to others are things that come naturally to us. Notice how you impact others by making the time to focus on doing “little things.” Notice how your actions in support of others actually impact how you feel about yourself and your contribution in your world.
