Clarity Is the Core of Your Strength

Who … What… When… Where… Why…

It’s true. Delving into these five, small-but-mighty words will produce clarity. And, clarity creates a firm foundation for Strengthening Your Core as a leader.

When we are clear on who we are and what’s important to us, everything seems … well … easier, enjoyable and rewarding. And who wouldn’t want that?

Getting really clear takes time and effort. Sure, it can be a bit overwhelming to figure out what really drives you. The good news is that by taking a close look at what you value and are passionate about, you’re off to a great start.

And don’t be surprised if you find out that some things are much more important than you ever imagined. For example, I discovered that I really value beautifully organized things – whether it’s a decorated room or a binder full of information. My briefcase, portfolio and business case holder are colors that make me smile! And organization is just as important as beauty; I’ve learned that if I’m around visual chaos, I can’t seem to focus very well. It’s actually one of my top 5 values; and when that value isn’t being served (by me or others), I’m not a happy camper.

Knowing what’s important to you – and the impact it has – is critical to defining the core of your being and your leadership. Nothing is “right/good” or “wrong/bad” when it comes to your personal values. Clarity is what’s most important.

This Week:

Get out a pad of paper and a pen; and write down every single word that comes to mind when you reflect on these questions. Don’t filter, don’t overthink, don’t judge, just write.

• Who do I most admire, and what do they stand for?
• What types of behaviors do I love to be around?
• When am I at my best?
• Where do I wish I could spend more of my time?
• Why exactly am I in the job I’m in?

What key words or themes do you see? What do you want to let go of / embrace more of? This is just the beginning, there is so much more to explore.
